ALAPOCAS – St. Mark’s played a strong defensive game, but Wilmington Friends was able to score three times in the first half on the way to a 3-0 win in nonconference field hockey on Sept. 13.

The game was scoreless for the first 15 minutes of the first half. But Quakers sophomore Carson Davis-Tinnell took a pass from outside the circle from senior Christina Aleman and found the net behind St. Mark’s goalie Shannon Glew, making it 1-0.

Friends kept the pressure on the Spartans’ defense throughout the first half, and it took just three minutes for the second goal to come. This time, it was senior Remy Davis-Tinnell poking it in after a scramble in front of Glew. Finally, Anna Erskine, a junior, pounced on a rebound of a shot by Blair Atkins, sending it home.

The Quakers had the opportunity to add to their goal total late in the half, but they were unable to connect on any of the three penalty corners they earned within a 30-second span.

A more aggressive St. Mark’s took the field in the second half. Ten minutes into the half, the Spartans’ pressure resulted in three successive penalty corners of their own, but they, too, could not find the net. Quakers goalie Emma Davis preserved the shutout with nine minutes remaining when she fended off a shot from in close.

Friends’ best chance to score in the second half came about halfway through. A shot off a penalty corner was tipped just left of the net.
