BEAR – Sean Murray scored twice and Blake Parker had 14 saves as Archmere began its boys soccer season with a 3-1 upset of top-ranked Caravel on Sept. 10 in Bear.

The Auks, ranked fifth in Division II, fell behind early on a penalty kick after a Caravel attacker was tackled inside the box in the fifth minute. The Auks responded two minutes later as Murray blasted home a 30-yard free kick into the top left corner. Parker kept it tied with two fantastic saves, one off a header by Cole Lewis, the other a diving stab of a Dominic Martone shot.

soccer“On the field, I have to be in my position, and everyone around me is doing their job, and I have to make those saves,” Parker said.

Archmere took advantage in the 25th minutes. Reid Niermann found Zach Dainton with a long pass, and Dainton scored far side for the lead.

The defenses carried the second half, with the only goal coming on a penalty shot by Murray in the 62nd minute.

“I’m not going to miss this,” Murray said. “I can’t be that guy.”

Archmere improves to 1-0 and is back on the pitch Tuesday at home vs. Newark Charter in a Diamond State Athletic Conference match at 3:45 p.m. Caravel (0-1) meets No. 1 Salesianum on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Hockessin Soccer Club.
