WILMINGTON – Padua, with a distinct leadership advantage, defeated Newark Charter on Jan. 15, 48-31. Newark Charter is still adding grades and does not yet have any seniors, and it showed on Friday night.
Pandas senior Gabby Julian hit a pair of three-pointers and classmate Megan Mallon scored on two free throws as the home team jumped out to an 8-1 lead. Padua started the second quarter on a six-point run to increase the lead to 14-3, with Mallon scoring all six on two field goals and two free throws.
The Patriots responded with four straight points, but the Pandas ended the half on a 10-point run to take a 24-7 lead into intermission.
Padua opened the third with some early points,with Camryn Scully’s two buckets – a three-pointer and a two-pointer – sandwiching another Mallon score. That gave the Pandas a 31-12 lead. They finished the third up 38-18. Newark Charter had its best scoring quarter in the fourth, as they put up 13 to Padua’s 10, but the Pandas were firmly in control.
Newark Charter was hurt by poor foul shooting, converting just seven of 26 attempts. Padua, on the other hand, hit nine of 10.
Mallon paced the Pandas with 20 points, including all of the team’s free throws. They have won three straight at home to improve to 3-6. Padua is on the road next week, starting with a trip to the Hun School (N.J.) on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. start.
Sandra Karr had 10 to lead the Patriots, nine of those coming in the second half. Newark Charter is now 5-6 and is off until Thursday, when they travel to Dickinson at 3:45 p.m.
